The 7 Easiest Winter Hair Tips & Tricks

Along with cooler temps and cozy times, winter also brings harsh weather and dry air (Thanks, Mother Nature!). If you're looking for some easy at-home hair hacks to keep your locks looking their best, try these easy winter beauty tips and tricks.

1. Keep your wet hair out of the cold

While drying your hair with heat can be damaging, wet hair is much more vulnerable in cold winter weather. In an interview with Self, James Corbett, owner of James Corbett Studio, said that going outside in the cold with wet hair puts you at risk for breakage and makes your color fade faster. So, try to wash your hair on days you can let it air-dry indoors, or use a heat-protectant before blow-drying if you're in a rush.

2. Wear (the right) hat

Whether you're hitting the slopes or going for a neighborhood stroll, it's important to protect your hair from the dry winter air. Harsh hat fabrics like wool and cotton can cause breakage, so reach for a silk- or satin-lined hat to help prevent damage and static.

3. Try an oil treatment

You probably moisturize your skin before you go to bed, so why not try moisturizing your hair this winter? Use a night serum or hair oil once or twice a week, applying to dry hair right before bed. On these nights, sleep on an old pillowcase or wrap your hair in a silky scarf to keep your bedding stain-free.

4. Treat your hair to a face mask

Deep-conditioning treatments are like face masks for the hair. These easy at-home solutions can make your hair softer, shinier, and more hydrated. You can do a rinse-out hair mask while you're in the shower, or use a leave-in conditioner once a week.

5. Prevent static and frizz

Leave-in conditioner can also help with frizz-causing static, a regular occurrence in colder months. Another quick trick for getting rid of wintry static is with a dryer sheet. Run it over your hair lightly to get rid of flyaways in a few seconds.

6. Keep it low with a bun or pony

If you tie your hair up in a high ponytail or top knot, give your hair a break with a relaxed low bun or pony. You won't have as much tension and pulling from your scalp (and bonus, keeps your neck warmer). This low-maintenance hairstyle is perfect for days in between washes. If you need a little more volume, try adding some dry shampoo before you start styling.

7. Give bangs a shot

Love bangs but not how they stick to your forehead in summer? Whether you've been thinking about classic blunt bangs or trendy curtain bangs, a cooler season is the perfect time to try out a new look. Plus, bangs can keep your hair out of your face in windy winter weather!
